Conference Abstract

Nowadays, the Mining Industry is aware that the mental health and well-being of their workforce is instrumental for safety and performance. This has led to an undertaking in the industry to commit to the ideal of ‘zero harm’ and to undertake research and implement initiatives that will bring one’s company closer to this ultimate goal. But how can an organization sort through the myriad of Mental Health and Well-Being Programmes on offer from a whole host of well-meaning service providers vying for their business? While EAP Counselling addresses problems after they have manifested, there is a powerful evidence-based technique that focuses on prevention rather than cure.

The Autogenic Training Programme, used by NASA to help their astronauts adapt to the psychological and physical stressors of space travel, focuses on building psycho-physiological resilience. It consists of a set of easy to learn mental exercises which enable your workforce to self-regulate their nervous system, manage their stress levels and boost their psychological and physical health and performance overall.

In this presentation, Helen Gibbons will give an overview and some hands-on experience of Autogenic Training and highlight the documented health and well-being benefits of this powerful technique for workers from high stress industries such as NASA Astronauts, NSW Police Force and Miners alike.
